Four-Wheel vs. All-Wheel Drive
So, what is FWD vs AWD? Good question. For starters, FWD stands for Front-Wheel Drive and AWD stands for All-Wheel Drive. Of course, it goes a little deeper than that. FWD is a type of drive-train that gets power from the engine to the front wheels. FWD is standard on most of the vehicles produced today. AWD means that the engine distributes power to all four wheels. SUVs use this type of transmission system, but this feature is also offered on an increasing number of vehicles. AWD is an option that costs a little more but provides a lot more power and control.
Why Front-Wheel Drive
There are several advantages to driving a FWD vehicle, but they all boil down to economics. Vehicles that use the Front-Wheel drive system are lighter, so they get better gas mileage. They are simpler systems and tend to be less expensive to maintain over the long-term. So, you not only save money on the sticker price over the AWD options but once you own them, they are less expensive to maintain and fuel. FWD vehicles also offer more legroom in the back seat because there’s no hump in the floor to accommodate the AWD transmission. Vehicles with front-wheel drive are better hill climbers too thanks in part to anti-lock brakes.
Why All-Wheel Drive
All-wheel drive sends power to four wheels so any slipping in one wheel or one set of wheels is compensated for by the other wheels. Four-wheel drive is different than all-wheel drive which features a lower gear when the going gets rough. AWD can be configured differently for different purposes. No matter which configuration is used, however, AWD provides better traction in snow and tough terrain. This makes it an attractive choice for off-roaders.
