Safety Tips for the Holiday Shopping Season
The Police Notebook, University of Oklahoma
Have a safe and happy holiday. Follow these safety tips while shopping.
- Always park in a spot where there’s plenty of light and as close to your destination as possible.
- If your credit card is stolen, misused or lost, be sure to notify your credit card issuer at once. In fact, it’s a good idea to keep a complete inventory of your credit cards at home, along with their 800 numbers, just in case.
- Try to shop with a friend or family member as two are safer than one.
- Place your packages in your trunk or on the floor so they aren’t easily seen.
- Leave your most expensive purchases until the end of the day when you can quickly hop in your car and go directly home.
- Be aware of your surroundings and don’t approach your car if suspicious characters are lurking about.
- Get into the car, lock the doors and exit the area immediately. Criminals prey on shoppers who sit in their cars to make phone calls or review their purchases. If trouble arises, don’t forget to press your blue OnStar button for help.
