When Is the Best Time to Buy a Car? Here’s What I’ve Learned After Helping Thousands of Customers

By Adam Pirman, Sales Manager at Apple Chevrolet
If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Should I buy now, or should I wait?” you’re definitely not alone. This is one of the most common questions customers ask me when they visit Apple Chevrolet, your Tinley Park Chevy dealer. After more than 18 years in the automotive industry, I have helped thousands of customers navigate the vehicle buying process, and I have learned that there is rarely one perfect answer that applies to everyone. Some customers believe the best time to buy is the end of the month. Others think the biggest savings only happen at the end of the year. Some shoppers decide they should wait because they think a better deal might be available tomorrow. The truth is a little more nuanced.
There isn’t one magic day when every vehicle suddenly becomes the perfect deal.
The best time to buy depends on three important factors:
- The vehicle you want
- The current Chevrolet incentives and market conditions
- Your personal situation
Here is how I explain it to customers who visit us at Apple Chevrolet in Tinley Park.
Incentives Matter More Than the Calendar
Many buyers focus on the date when trying to determine the best time to purchase a vehicle.
They may hear that the end of the month is the best time to buy or that waiting until the end of the year will guarantee the biggest savings.
While timing can sometimes create opportunities, Chevrolet incentives and programs change based on many factors, including inventory levels, market conditions, and manufacturer goals, not simply because it is the last day of the month.
Over the years, I have seen customers wait for a specific date expecting a better deal, only to find that an incentive expired, interest rates changed, or the vehicle they wanted was no longer available.
If you find a vehicle that fits your needs and the current incentives make sense for your budget, waiting is not always the best decision.
Sometimes the best opportunity is the one available today
Inventory Changes Every Day
One thing many shoppers don’t realize is how quickly vehicle inventory changes.
The Silverado, Tahoe, Equinox, Traverse, or Trax you have been researching today might not still be available next week.
This is especially true when customers are looking for a specific combination of features, colors, trim levels, or packages.
I have worked with customers who waited because they were hoping for a slightly better price, only to come back and discover that the exact vehicle they wanted had already been sold.
A vehicle that perfectly fits your lifestyle and needs can sometimes be more valuable than waiting for a small additional discount.
The End of the Month Can Help, But Not Always
There is some truth behind the idea that the end of the month can create additional opportunities.
Dealerships do have monthly goals, and depending on inventory and available programs, there can sometimes be advantages to shopping near the end of a month.
However, the idea that every vehicle automatically becomes a better deal on the last day of the month is not accurate.
Every customer is different.
Every vehicle is different.
Every Chevrolet incentive program is different.
The best time to buy is when the numbers make sense for your specific situation.
Your Trade-In Value Is Part of the Equation
One area many customers overlook is the value of their current vehicle.
When deciding whether it is the right time to buy, many people focus only on the price of the vehicle they want to purchase. But your trade-in value can play a major role in the overall decision.
Used vehicle values change throughout the year based on market demand, mileage, condition, and inventory.
I have seen customers wait several months hoping the price of their trade would increase, only to discover that their current vehicle was worth less when they returned.
The best decision comes from looking at the entire picture:
- The vehicle you are buying
- Your current vehicle’s value
- Available incentives
- Your lifestyle needs
- Your long-term goals
My Advice: Don’t Try to Perfectly Time the Market
If you find a vehicle that fits your needs, your budget, and your family, don’t get caught up trying to find the “perfect day” to buy.
Buying a vehicle is not like buying a gallon of milk. It is a decision you will likely live with for several years.
The best purchase is the one that gives you confidence, not the one that leaves you wondering if you should have waited another month.
My advice is simple: do your research, ask questions, understand your options, and make a decision that works best for you.
