We bid you farewell, Avalanche
In 2001, Chevy introduced us all to the Avalanche, and more than 580,000 have been sold since. Let’s have a look at just a few awards the Avalanche was able to snag:
2002:
- Motor Trend Truck of the Year
- Popular Science Grand Award-Best of what’s new in 2002 Cars
- Popular Mechanics – Design and Engineering Award
- Automobile Journalists Association of Canada Best New Pickup Truck
- Northwest Auto Press Association 4-door Pickup Truck of the Year
- “Texas Truck Rodeo” Ultimate Utility Vehicle Award
- Edmund’s Auto Review Editors Choice Most Wanted Large Crew Cab Pickup
- MotorWeek’s Drivers’ Choice Award – Best Crossover Vehicle
- Auto Interiors Magazine 2002 Auto Interior of the Year

2003:

- JD Powers & Associates Customer Retention Study.
- Automotive Journalists Association of Canada – Truck of the Year
So finally, Chevrolet has decided it’s time to pull the plug, while the Avalanche is still somewhat on a high note.
Michelle Krebs, senior analyst at Edmunds.com says, “It was a vehicle that maintained the traditional truck image and capability but was more versatile for the person buying it for personal use more than work – a lifestyle truck more than a work truck. Other variations on the theme from competitors followed the Avalanche’s debut.”
So, in order for the Chevy Avalanche to go out with a bang, Chevy has decided to celebrate its final year in production with the 2013 Black Diamond Avalanche! (oohhhh…ahhhhh!)
This includes a read camera, rear park assist, power adjustable pedals, fog lamps, and a remote start, all added as standard equipment on LS models. The LT models have the added standard rear camera. The 2WD Avalanche LS is now starting at $35,980, plus the $995 dealer freight charge.
Mark Clawson, the Avalanche marketing manager, says, “Although Avalanche sales have tapered off in recent years, as crew cabs have grown to dominate Silverado sales, we know there are many Avalanche enthusiasts among Chevy customers. The Black Diamond Avalanche is our way of saying ‘Thank you’ and making it just a little more attractive to own one more Avalanche.”
It’s been real, Avalanche. We will miss you.
