Dropping the Top on a Camaro Convertible Just Got Better
At Apple Chevrolet, the only car we like better than a Camaro coupe is a Camaro convertible. That’s why we were so thrilled last month when we heard about Chevy’s unveiling of the 2016 model of the Camaro convertible.
Lighter by a several hundred pounds, the 2016 model will feature an electro-hydraulic system which allows the top to be lowered and folded down below the belt line where it is then covered by the hard cover. The roof system itself is pretty impressive for the ease in which it raises and lowers the top. Using this electro-hydraulic power system makes the process quiet and seamless and the top is insulated to keep in the heat during the colder months when you don’t dare put it down but need to cruise in your Camaro nonetheless.
A choice of trim levels will be offered which will include the LT and SS levels and the top will be available in a choice of blue, black or brown. Six powertrain combination will also be available. The 2 liter turbo powertrain is capable of delivering 275 horsepower, while the 3.6 liter V6 kicks out 335. The LT1 has a 6.2 liter V8 engine producing 455 hp. Pretty impressive. All powertrain options are offered in either six- or eight-speed automatic transmissions.
But back to the top for a moment. The top on the 2016 model is fully automatic and that means 100%. There are no latches to pull, so the lid can be opened on the road at speeds of up to 30 miles per hour. It can also be opened remotely with the key fob (take that, Ford Mustang!). The top comes down in less than 20 seconds. While this is roughly twice the time of the Mustang, good luck lowering their top at speeds faster than a three mile per hour crawl.
As for cost, that information has not been made available just yet, but if pricing on the 2015 is any indicator, the 2016 model will likely cost between five and six thousand more than the coupe version when it goes on sale in early 2016.
Stay tuned for this beauty’s arrival! Meanwhile, summer and fall are the times to really enjoy a Chevy Camaro convertible, so come on down and see us at Apple Chevrolet while the weather is still nice and warm.
