Chevy Announces Most of Their 2016 Lineup Will Have Android Auto
Do you love your Android phone, but hate how the world seems to only cater to Apple and its users (even though, according to sales, Apple only sells .1% more than Android does)? Then here’s some news that might ease your headache: Chevrolet just announced that 14 of the 2016 model year lineup will have Android Auto, most of them at the most basic trim level. Pretty exciting, right?
If you count the convertibles being the same car as their coupe cousins, then it’s actually only 12. Either way, that’s pretty big news, especially since Android users haven’t been getting much love from the auto world in recent years.
Here’s a list of the 2016 lineup that will be able to connect with your Android device from AdroidPolice.com:
- Chevy Spark
- Cruze
- Malibu
- Camaro (and Camaro Convertible)
- Silverado
- Silverado HD
- Colorado
- Chevy Impala
- Volt
- Corvette (and Corvette Convertible)
- Tahoe
- Suburban
Yup, every single one of these vehicles for the 2016 model year will already have Android Auto or will have Android Auto in a future update. David Ruddock from AndroidPolice.com explains why that last part sounds a little less than reassuring:
“Chevrolet has two infotainment systems it’s pushing for 2016 – MyLink 7″ and MyLink 8″. One is billed as a basic system, one is a premium system. You can guess which is which. Both are also from different suppliers, meaning different chipsets and parts, so Auto (and CarPlay) must be developed and tested on both systems. Right now, the MyLink 7″ will support Android Auto right off the showroom floor — no updates (supposedly) necessary. The nicer 8″ system isn’t quite there yet. Chevy is committed to putting Auto on the 8″ systems, though, and customers will get a software update to add support at a later date.”
So basically, Chevy didn’t forget about all you Android lovers, and it’s actually pretty nice and refreshing to see a major auto company catering to a major tech audience that, despite its massive audience, sometimes gets ignored, especially by app developers which can be endlessly frustrating (we have amazing customization ability, sleek interfaces, and wide array of phone to choose from. Why can’t we also get apps that work for both interfaces?). There’s been plenty of buzz about Android Auto and Chevy all over the internet, so it’s pretty clear the news is exciting.
