By 2024, GM hopes to work with Michelin to introduce Michelin’s Unique Puncture-proof Tire System into their passenger vehicles. Using flexible ribs to create the tire structure, airless tires provide substantial benefit to consumers and producers alike, leading to an all-around more efficient and streamlined driver experience!
What Do We Know?
GM’s future vision includes less emissions, less congestion, and a cleaner future for automobiles. A major piece of this goal is airless tires, leading to less raw material waste and more elegant vehicle use. Working with Michelin, GM plans to initiate real-world testing of airless tires on a test fleet of Chevrolet Bolt electric vehicles. The Chevy Bolt is already a top-of-the-line electric vehicle, consistently leading the pack in terms of electric efficiency and technology. Lastly, airless tires are always at the perfect pressure, maximizing battery usage and range by reducing resistance.
Looking to the Future…
GM and Michelin have not revealed exactly how they will be using their new airless tires. However, initial reports suggest GM is working on an electric vehicle, similar to the Chevy Bolt, that will feature airless tires immediately off the supply line. After centuries of tire usage, GM will literally reinvent the wheel in the next few years!
