A Classic Chevrolet Takes Top Prize at Reno’s Hot August Nights
At Apple Chevrolet, we always appreciate any good events involving a new Chevrolet car or truck. But we are also especially interested in hearing about classic Chevy models from way, way back in the day. Hearing about the recent Ultimate Best In Show prize nabbed by a 1962 Chevy Bel Air bubble top at the Hot August Nights hot rod show in Reno, Nevada, revved our engines for sure.
What began as a modest attempt at helping fill a dip in tourism in Reno, Nevada during the dog days of summer has turned into an annual event for hot rod junkies. Back in 1986, 10,000 spectators showed up at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center for the chance to see some of the coolest cars from the ‘50s and ‘60s and to listen to the music of the Righteous Brothers and Jan & Dean. Fast forward nearly 30 years later and the event has gotten much bigger and much better. With the involvement of the classic car auction company, Barrett-Jackson, beginning in 2013, the top Best in Show prize now has a payout of 30 grand with another nearly $28,000 in prizes.
The Barrett-Jackson Cup winner this August went to Rand and Lisa Wilcox and their 1962 Chevy Bel Air bubble top. This winning Chevy was designed by Bob Thrash and built by Andy Leach at Cal Automotive Creations of Omaha, Nebraska. The sleek silver paint job was done by Charley Hutton. What can we say, the judges were spot on in recognizing both the inherent beauty in the lines of this great Chevy as well as the redesign that went into it. The body of the bubble top was not altered much, but was enhanced to showcase this great car.
Not surprisingly, the first runner-up at the event was a ’57 Chevy Pickup and the second runner-up was a 1965 Chevy Impala. It was a good day to be a classic Chevy hot rod, as well as a Chevy fan.
