Chevrolet Debuts Chevy FNR Concept Car In Shanghai
Quartz online describes the new build as a Batmobile DeLorean hybrid complete with all the high-tech accessories you’d expect in a 2030 concept.
From iris-recognition ignition, dragonfly doors, crystal laser head and tail lights, wireless device charging, and a radar mapping system mounted on the roof of the vehicle, it has all the futuristic features one would hope for. According to Chevy’s press release, they consider the FNR science fiction movie-worthy, but also wanted to create something that speaks to the needs of a trendier and more technologically-aware user base.
And it doesn’t stop with the tech — both inside and out, the FNR design offers a glimpse at the streamlined Chevy aesthetic of 2030 complete with all-mesh seats and smooth dark blue accents throughout the digitally-projected dashboard. Additionally, an artificially intelligent assistant works in congruence with the radar mapping system to offer routing recommendations.
Designed in Shanghai by GM’s Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC), the FNR is a catchall for a lot of the concepts Chevy is currently experimenting with for future development not only on the FNR but other Chevy vehicles.
So, what science fiction flick would be complete without a car in self-driving mode? With a fully electric system the Find New Roads concept can operate autonomously while the 180-degree swivel seats allow the relinquished driver and front seat passenger to face those in the backseat. Hopefully by 2030 we will have addressed the issue of autonomous vehicles interacting on the road. Mercedes just completed a fully-autonomous trip to Las Vegas in their latest concept vehicle, so at the very least we’re on the way.
All these cool features aside, GM, Chevy’s parent company, might not be able to fund the Find New Roads concept vehicle anytime soon. We can only hope that the parts required to make such a futuristic vehicle will become cheap enough to make sense on a large production scale in the consumer market.
With all signs pointing to a more technologically tuned-in market, it’s definitely in Chevy’s best interest to push the intelligent qualities of their upcoming models. Competition in the luxury arena from brands like Mercedes mean that staying on the cutting edge of the cutting edge will be necessary in the upcoming years.
